He blogs, posts travel writing and reports on education and social justice issues on his webzine CriticalWork.
Royal has a PhD in English, Composition and Rhetoric. His academic writing and research interests develop from themes in cultural studies, critical pedagogy and through examining the academic practices in "basic" writing as a locus for class, racial and gender injustice. He has taught writing, cultural studies and service learning courses at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and taught research writing, "basic" writing and media communications courses at a number of other schools, including Minneapolis Community and Technical College and Saint Cloud State University in Minnesota. Royal currently teaches courses in the Prepared Learner Initiative Program at Milwaukee Area Technical College and is Adjunct Associate Professor of Writing and Humanities at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.
A visual artist (photo-essayist, photo-journalist, and fine art photographer), Royal has published photos with OnMilwaukee.com, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Details Magazine, and others. He is also currently working on a series of photos documenting the ever-changing Lake Michigan; that is, when not adding to the ongoing series of "Alley TVs."
