The Milwaukee Ofrenda![]() The Milwaukee Ofrenda is part of the 2012 Día de los Muertos installation at the Walker's Point Center for the Arts (WPCA). An Ofrenda is an altar: building one is part of a traditional Mexican practice for honoring the dead that has been embraced by many people. The Milwaukee Ofrenda honors 33 people and places in Milwaukee that have passed. There are 13 ofrendas in the WPCA show, now in its 20th year. Traditional ofrendas display artifacts related to the dead, mementos, photos, food and drink which attract the spirit during a time of year when it is believed that the veil between the living and the dead is the thinnest.
Brevväxlings create ofrendas at home throughout the year as a spiritual exercise and publicly to be shared. Here's our artists' statement from the exhibit:

NOLA LOVE Zine![]() The Brevväxlings are zinësters. We believe that expression through this medium is among the most powerful of all independent media. DIY media is as important in this day and age as it has been throughout human history. (Just ask William Blake.)
Our zine NOLA Love is essentially the first of a potential series of love letters to the City of New Orleans; as we write on its first page, "NOLA Love is dedicated to the City of New Orleans and to all the people who live there, who have lived there and who will someday live there." NOLA Love debuted at the Milwaukee Zine Fest 2012 and is available at People's Books Cooperative and Fischberger's Variety in Milwaukee and The Waxwing in Shorewood, Wis. Other Brevväxling zines include "A (Very) Brevväxling Zine" and Molly's "Me and Björk: A Love Story" and "Me and Morrissey." Refer to our Zine page for updates. Molly and Royal have conducted a children's zine workshop, "Z is for Zine," at the Milwaukee Zine Fest for the past three years. In 2012, we had a table offering zines created by kids. |
