I offer an array of editing services at different price points for different services. I will edit any text in any genre, of any length: fiction, non-fiction, and academic. I promise a close-read and quick turnarounds, typically within a week for most services.
NEW CLIENTS: Give my services a try at a lower rate (see "Special Rates," below).
My qualifications: I have a PhD in English, Composition and Rhetoric with over 15 years teaching copyediting skills in educational settings and 20 years experience as a copy editor and proofreader for various websites and publications, such as Rethinking Schools and OnMilwaukee.com.
Proofing
Proofing is a review of finished copy before submission or publication. I will correct any typos and minor sentence-level issues in grammar, punctuation, spelling, verb tense, etc., in texts where the writer’s purpose is otherwise clear. Proofreading occurs after the text has already been copyedited (by the author and / or other editors) and after any substantial changes were made for author’s intent, narrative arc, audience concerns, general readability, etc.
Copyediting
Copyediting is reviewing a text for clarity and author’s intent. I will check the text for consistency, re-write sentences, offer suggestions for improvement along with proofing corrections of typos and sentence-level inconsistencies. Copyediting does not involve helping to further develop a story or concept and no stylistic suggestions are offered beyond the sentence level; these services are called "developmental editing" and are discussed below.
Developmental Editing
Developmental editing is working with a writer to, in short, develop a better text; this is a version of what I do as a classroom writing instructor. Developmental editing is sometimes referred to as "content editing" or "fundamental editing," and rates vary widely among editors: my rates are very competitive.
Some writers workshop texts with other writers, receiving and giving feedback similar to what I would offer as an editor. In addition to the kinds of help writers can get in a workshop setting, as a developmental editor, I work one-on-one with a writer: as both a peer and as a tutor, as another writer and as an expert who has the necessary distance from the text to offer more critical insight. Developmental editing for fiction writing includes strengthening an author's voice (without simply replacing it with the editor's), improving storylines and story elements, such as dialogue, description, and conflict. Developmental editing for non-fiction and academic prose involves designating strategies to achieve clarity of expression, advice for working with source texts, and correctly applying different citation styles.
Special Rates
I offer new clients a rate of .003 / word for all proofing and copyediting services.

- Rate: Contracted, as negotiated by the writer and editor. Writers can send me a writing sample of at least 1,000 words and a letter outlining the work they would like to focus on and I will return a quote for services. The quote is a beginning place for negotiations; what we decide upon together gets concretized in a binding contract.
- Examples: I can be contracted to 1) review a draft once, offering feedback to develop the writing based both on what the writer requests and any additional issues I see / ideas I have; 2) maintain a correspondence with the writer over multiple drafts through the entire drafting process; 3) focus on a narrowed aspect of the text as specified by the writer; 4) provide a range of ghostwriting services, from assuming control over the entire text to writing or revising certain sections.
Special Rates
I offer new clients a rate of .003 / word for all proofing and copyediting services.
- Example: New clients are charged $30.00 for proofing or copyediting 10,000 words; all subsequent work is contracted at the rates listed above.
- Examples: I would charge the writer of a 66,715-word dissertation (like mine) $200.15 (rounding up) for most proofing and copy editing services or $250.15 for proofing and copyediting at the .003/word rate, plus an additional $50.00 for checking the document against graduate school and citation style submission guidelines. (The writer would need to provide a link to the particular graduate school’s website or a .pdf copy of its publication requirements.) I also charge the extra $50.00 if you’d like me to look at document design (margins, headings, placement of figures in an academic text, etc.: anything in addition to the words), read and correct for content based on a particular style guide, or to address stylistic issues that arise in the texts of ESL (English-as-Second-Language) academic writers.
- I may charge extra for texts written in British or Australian English (unless it's the writer's intent to change the text to meet Edited American English standards) and, for academic writing, some citation styles. Any such charges and rates are negotiable and will be agreed upon before I take the assignment: there are no surprises nor hidden costs working with me.
- Contact me with any questions or to get started. I look forward to hearing from you.
